Memorial Unveiling
On 3rd of February 2021, Ngāti Manu, Te Kapotai, Ngāti Hau and Ngāti Hine will welcome whānau, hapū and iwi from across the nation and around the world to commemorate the unveiling of the British memorial to remember the British soldiers who fell at the battle of Te Ruapekapeka.
The day is to remember and honour all of those who fought on both sides at Te Ruapekapeka, including the women and children who fought on the front line and supported the fighting throughout. A memorial will be unveiled for the 12 British soldiers and sailors buried on Te Ruapekapeka. This is a public event open to everyone.
Whanau from around the world will be able to virtually attend a live feed of the event via Ngati Hine FM on the day.

Battle of Te Ruapekapeka
On 8th January 2021, Ngāti Manu, Te Kapotai, Ngāti Hau and Ngāti Hine will welcome whānau, hapū and iwi from across the nation to commemorate the end of the Battle of Te Ruapekapeka (10 January 1846).
The theme for the commemorations is Kawea a puriri mai – in reverence, remembrance and reconciliation.
Over three days, wananga will be held with visits to other battle sites in and around Te Peowhairangi, including Ngawha Marae, Ohaewai, Te Ahuahu, Mawhe Kairangi and Te Ruapekapeka Pa.
On Sunday 10th January, a commemoration ceremony will be held at Te Ruapekapeka Pa from 7am with a flag raising ceremony and a re-enactment of the NZ Wars.
Nei te maioha atu kia koutou kei nga tōpito katoa o Āotearoa, haria mai o mate kia tangihia kia mihia ki te Ruapekapeka. We welcome one and all, to join us in the commemoration of Te Ruapekapeka.
WHERE
The commemorations will be based at the Kawiti marae Waiomio Taitokerau.
GETTING THERE
From Whangarei drive north on SH1 for 52 km, turn right onto Waiomio Road.
From Kawakawa head south on SH1 for 5km, turn left onto Waiomio Road.
Travel 1km and turn left down towards the Kawiti Caves. The carpark can easily accommodate camper vans.
